Pro Gaming - What Happens Next?

Lastnight I was reading about what’s going on in the Pro Gaming industry and most of the news I found was bad news. Yes there are a few gamers making a living from pro-gaming while others are barely getting buy and being ripped off by team managers and sponsors. There are so many leagues now that it’s nearly impossible to keep up with them all, and each of them are claiming to be the best.

Interest in Quake Live [free game] Growing

According to this Google Insight report search volumes for id softwares newest quake title “Quake Live” are on the rise. Which countries are searching for Quake Live? The top 4 are; Poland, Germany, Canada and the United States with the United Kingdom close behind. Poland has always been known for their Quake communities and it looks like they are ready to attack another Quake title.

I hope we continue to see interest levels in Quake Live grown and I feel that when this title launches, as long as things are running smoothly it should be a great success.

Site Redesign and Quake Live Hopes

With the recent announcement of Quake Live and Quakecon going on right now I’ve been getting the Quake bug. I took some time today to give the website a facelift… I hope you like it. I have been in contact with the oS members and many of them are looking forward to playing Quake Live. Could this be the game to revise all us old deathmatch players? Lets hope so!

Diablo 3 and Quake Live!

Blizzard announced Diablo 3, the third installment of their action RPG, at their World Inivtational held in Paris, France. Fans of the series have been looking forward to this for a long time now. The announcement comes as a surprise, as Blizzard is currently working on Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack to World of Warcraft. Seeing as their two different types of games, I don’t see Diablo 3 taking any momentum away from WoW for an extended period of time.

Quake Live - A web based version of Quake 3, and completely free. Ads will be displayed in game, but will not be installed onto the user’s machine. It comes fully packed with a rating system, allowing you to play people in your skill bracket. It is still in development, but you can sign up for the Beta at www.quakelive.com

Wow, My Brother in Law Plays WoW?

I just moved into my new house with my girlfriend a week ago and I invited my sister and her husband to visit. I really haven’t had much of a relationship with them for the past few years so this seemed like a good time to catch up. They have three Kids two boys and the oldest is a girl who is 5, that makes me an uncle three times over. Makes me feel old sometimes but I will be 25 in less than a month. Hard to believe I started gaming so so so long ago. Anyway during our dinner I found out that my brother in law had been bitten by the WoW bug. He went on and on about how much he loves to play WoW and how his co-workers at Home Depot got him into it (ages 30-55). I was blow away at how even today, years after World of Warcrafts release it can still pull in new players and get them so addicted. I have no interest in playing WoW but you have to respect a game that has such a large player base and is still growing years after it’s initial release. My brother in-law even went on to tell me about how my 5 year old neice will ask him to go play his game so she can watch. I guess even 5 year old little girls can love WoW…

All I have to say is wow WoW, way to go! GG!

I Got a Nintendo Wii

So I decided to spend some money on myself last weekend and got myself a nintendo wii. Of course wii sports is a blast, you can’t deny that. But I had to get something that didn’t come in the box… so I jumped online and did some research of the games available. I saw “game party” and it had ski ball, hoops and even a beer pong game so that sounded like a blast… I went to my local gamespot and picked up a copy… played it for 20mins and it was 20mins of the worst gaming experience of my life. I then decided I had to get something else… I saw some things about a game called “No More Heroes” and it had an average score of 9 on gamerankings.com so it had to be good…

I went back to the gamespot and tried to return “game party” and they would only give me $10 store credit for it… I paid $35 errrrrrrrr.

So I got my copy of “No More Heroes” and went home. At first I was kind of disappointed with the gameplay since it didn’t really let me swing the sword freely, as if my wii remote was the sword. Instead you press A to swing the sword and only swing the remote to do kill moves.

After getting over the fact that I was not swinging the sword as much as I originally thought I really began to enjoy the game. I see now why they held back on the sword swinging. After 10mins of playing the game you’d be sweating balls because there is so much action… I mean A LOT OF ACTION. So swinging the sword to do a kill move is very gratifying and the story so far is really good for the casual gamer like myself. It’s not a long winded story they are very good at moving the story along quickly… well I’m getting tired of talking about this game and I need to go play it… I’ll continue this post another time!

InstantAction - The Future of Online Gaming?

I recently came across a website called InstantAction.com. What is Instant Action? It is a web based platform that brings together online gaming, social elements such as; chat and online profiles and it does all this with ease and for web based graphics they are top notch. It has been proven that the casual online gaming market is much larger than the hardcore PC gaming market and I think we will see a lot more services like this in the future. Recently we have also seen announcements from Dice and ID software about free to play online games like Quake Live and Battlefield Heroes.

Publishers are seeing a market in Free to Play, ad supported games. It has come to the attention of game developers and gamers themselves that to compete in the PC Gaming market you need games that are playable across PCs of all types, from low end to high end. I expect we will see more services like this popping up in the near future.
